What is a KETO diet?
It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, and replacing it with fat. The reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.
Well then what the heck is ketosis?
It is a metabolic state in which some of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides energy (ummmmm hello, plain english please!!) It is when your body uses Fat for energy instead of Carbs
How will I have energy if I am not eating carbs?
You will train your body to use fats for energy, therefore as long as you are eating enough fats your body will be full of energy. If you feeling low in energy then you will simply need to eat more fat to fuel your body.
I just started the KETO diet and I have NO ENERGY even though I am eating a lot of fat, why?
Well the key word here is "Just started" it takes a couple of weeks for your body to get adapted to this new "fat as fuel" source. So initially when you cut your carbs drastically your body is still looking for carbs as energy and since you have none, you will feel sluggish and even a bit ill (Known as the Keto Flu) this will subside after a few days (for some up to 2 weeks). This is the worst part of starting the keto diet and unfortunately this is when people tend to give up. DONT DO IT, once you get thru this you will really start to reap the benefits and the results of the keto lifestyle.
I lost 10lbs my first week on the KETO diet, how is that possible?
Well before you get too excited, the majority of that is water weight, what people do not realize is that When you consume carbohydrates, your body converts them to glycogen, which is then stored in the muscles for energy. For every gram of glycogen stored, you gain approximately 2.7 grams of water. This water retention occurs because your kidneys hold on to sodium in response to carbohydrate consumption. So initially, you will be dropping quite a bit of water weight. You will still feel lighter and leaner immediately which will feel amazing & don't worry the real fat loss will come shortly thereafter.
Do I have to count Calories and Macros on the KETO Diet?
Not Really...When I start someone on a plan I initially will calculate the macros just to get an idea of the overall volume they should be eating. But you really do not have to calculate calories or macros. I personally do not. The fact is that Fats are extremely filling and when you are eating a diet high in fat it is really difficult to overeat.
Can I have a CHEAT DAY on the KETO diet?
YES, Absolutely...I know there are differences of opinion on this, but I am a firm believer in CHEAT DAYS! Regardless of what diet plan i have been on, I have always allowed myself a cheat day. Its what gets me thru the hard days. Now, that being said there are some rules, but it differs per person and depends on what your goals are. Maybe for you it would be better to just have 1 cheat meal per week until you have met your weightless goals and then transition over to a CHEAT DAY or perhaps 2 cheat meals would work better for you. again, this is the type of thing that really depends on the person and I would have to know a little bit more about you to determine what is best. You don't HAVE TO have a cheat day, or even a cheat meal, You can skip a week if you want, its really up to you.
If I have a Cheat Meal or a Cheat Day will i fall out of Ketosis?
Yes you will, but no big deal, the next day get right back to your Keto Diet and you will go back into ketosis. The longer you are on a leto based diet the quicker it is for you to get back into ketosis. For example, If you have a cheat day 1 week into the keto diet, it might take you 3 days to get back into ketosis. However if you have a cheat day 6 mos into your Keto diet, you might be right back into ketosis within 12 hours. its all about training your body. What you DO NOT want to do is string 2 cheat days together!! That is a big NO NO and it will take even longer to get your body back to that fat burning state. I would not recommend it.
